Krista Downey, B.E.S., C. Arch

Krista Downey brings a wide variety of design experience to a project.

Her design, project management experience and group facilitating skills bring clients, community groups and steering committees together to create projects as diverse as eco tourism retreats, health and wellness centres, long term care facilities, places of worship, equestrian facilities, and residential developments.

With complimentary degrees in Environmental Studies and Architecture from the University of Waterloo, Krista believes that all building typologies and development can and should subscribe to sustainable building practices. With this design philosophy, Krista created Green Canary Group.

Green Canary Group successfully integrates site, systems and materials and currently offers consultation, design and management for numerous green building projects throughout North America. Krista’s ability to communicate with client groups allows user needs analysis, program development, design and construction to become an integrated and informative process for all involved.

Equally versatile in designing multi-purpose public buildings or eco-friendly residences, Krista is also well known for her innovative equine and equestrian facilities and animal wellness projects. She is a member of numerous sustainable design groups and animal related organizations and lectures and presents workshops in these areas of interest.

As one of the greenest developments in North America, Krista’s own award winning residence, design studio and equestrian facility features cutting edge systems and technologies and uses recycled, repurposed and renewable materials throughout.

The Integrated Approach

The Green Canary Group relies on their profound understanding of the relationships between site, systems and materials. The firm believes in having a deeply rooted connection to a project site and sense of place. Assessing the natural attributes of a site allows both passive and active systems to become a layer of design.

Inventive and resonating use of renewable, recycled and repurposed material unearths the client’s uniqueness and promotes a better understanding of the ecological benefits and opportunities.

Regardless of project scale or typology, rural or urban, net-metred or off grid, new or retrofit construction, the Green Canary Group provides clients with the tools to make informed and educated decisions, perceive a more ethical future and live well in the present.

A sustainable world "meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs". (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987)
